The NEMA Type 1 Electrical enclosure is the base model for the National Electrical Manufacturers Association. The NEMA type 1 model is the foundation for all of the NEMA electrical enclosures. All other enclosures (Type 2 – 13) are based off the NEMA type 1, but have added levels of protection and complexities.
The NEMA Type 1 electrical enclosure is built only for indoor use. The enclosures two main purposes are to limit exposure of personnel to its hazardous contents and to protect its contents from falling dust. Protecting persons from accidentally coming into contact with the enclosed electrical components and keep dust from falling on the components, which could cause over heating or fire.
The electrical components are enclosed for safety and although not required, are usually accessible only through a screw covered lid, hinged covered lid or latched cover.
NEMA Type 1 electrical enclosures are often used for start and stop stations, as well as for small motors. Type 1 enclosures provide minimal protection and are not suitable for any conditions that require protection from water, oil or blowing dust. The NEMA type 1 electrical enclosure is compatible with the UL type 1 electrical enclosure.
