One of the key elements to being listed as a weather proof junction box is that the box have a rubber gasket on the door or lid. The box must not allow water, sleet, rain, snow or other harsh elements that will damage the electrical equipment that is enclosed.

NEMA and UL set the industry standards for weather proof classifications and specifications with electrical equipment. The NEMA and UL Type 3 and Type 4 are the most commonly used weather proof electrical junction boxes. Both are weather resistant with various differences in the construction, materials used and type of protection. Both are made for outdoor or indoor use and are rugged long lasting enclosures.
